SUMMARY:Tandem Presents: Black Quilters: Hard Topics\, Soft Blows
DESCRIPTION:Tandem Presents: \n\n\n\nBlack Quilters: Hard Topics\, Soft Blows \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSupport Provided By Advancing Racial Equity (ARE) Speakers Bureau from Indiana Humanities\n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening with Tony Jean Dickerson\, Founding President of the Akoma Ntoso Modern Quilt Guild of Central Indiana \n\n\n\nEvent Highlights \n\n\n\n\nTalk by Tony Jean Dickerson\, Ed.D. followed by Q&A (Free) \n\n\n\nHonoring Black and Indigenous Midwifery Practice in North America (Free)\n\n\n\nQuilt Square Crafting Workshop (Free)\n\n\n\nMocktails ($)\n\n\n\nSilent Auction ($)\n\n\n\n\nPlease RSVP! \n\n\n\n\n\nTandem is in the final stages of its community quilt project. The quilts being made by community members will be hung at Tandem in birthing and postpartum rooms – to serve as a visual reminder of the supportive community welcoming the birth of new families in our community. The talk by Dr. Dickerson on the history and significance of quilts\, particularly rooted in the African American tradition\, holds immense importance for our community at Tandem. This topic offers a unique opportunity to deepen our understanding of cultural heritage\, social connections\, and the power of symbols\, aligning perfectly with the values and goals of our organization. \n\n\n\nEngaging in this talk will promote cultural awareness and sensitivity within our community. Understanding the history and significance of quilts in the African American tradition will broaden our perspectives and promote cross-cultural understanding and respect. The community quilt project itself is a testament to the power of collective effort and community bonding. Exploring the history of quilts within the African American tradition will further strengthen our sense of inclusivity\, creating a space where diverse voices and stories are honored and celebrated. By delving into the history of quilts\, participants will develop a deeper appreciation for the symbolism and meaning behind these creations. This newfound knowledge will enrich the experience of both creating and viewing the community quilts that will adorn our birthing and postpartum rooms.  \n\n\n\nIncorporating Dr. Dickerson’s talk into our community’s engagement with the Tandem quilt project amplifies the significance of the project itself. It adds layers of historical\, cultural\, and social meaning to the quilts\, making them not just visual artifacts but also powerful symbols of unity\, history\, and shared experiences. This talk will leave a lasting imprint on our community\, enhancing the impact of our organization and strengthening the bonds that tie us together. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Tony Jean Dickerson (she/her) was born and raised in Indianapolis\, Indiana\, and has earned degrees from Lincoln University\, University of Central Missouri\, and University of Missouri-Kansas City. In 2019\, after a successful thirty-year career in education she earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Kansas. She returned home in 2017 and became the lead faculty for Martin University’s School of Education’s Teacher Preparation Program in June of 2022. Besides teaching\, Dr. Dickerson is a nationally recognized quilter and is a member of 8 local and national quilt guilds including the founding president of the Akoma Ntoso Modern Quilt Guild of Central Indiana. \n\n\n\n\n
