Haddie Katz
CO-FOUNDER, PRESIDENT
Haddie was born and raised in Bloomington, Indiana. After completing her BA in Gender Studies and Human Sexuality from Indiana University, she became a Certified Doula (CD, DONA). She served as a doula in home and hospital settings while learning about out-of-hospital birth. She started her midwifery education in Indiana, before moving to attend the Florida School of Traditional Midwifery. There, she completed her MEAC-accredited program and full-time apprenticeship through three birth center/home birth practices. She practiced for several years in home and birth center settings before returning to Bloomington. Haddie is a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM), Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) and childbirth educator. She actively serves the home birth midwifery community while attending school and raising a boisterous toddler.

Julie Duhon
CO-FOUNDER, TREASURER
Julie grew up in Bloomington, Indiana. After high school, she traveled internationally for three years, living and studying in Krakow, Poland and Kerala, India, before returning to Indiana University for her degree in Mathematics. She then moved to Wisconsin to work as a “Problem Solver” at Epic, working on inpatient and oncology electronic health records software. After that, she worked for Stanford Health Care in Palo Alto, California working first in clinical informatics before moving into IT infrastructure and management. Julie now wrangles 3 darling children as her full time job. Julie is also an adjunct instructor of Healthcare Informatics Management at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Alissa Weiss
SECRETARY
Alissa is a Bloomington transplant from Chicago. They have held an array of positions including emergency room technician, farmer, and baker and gained invaluable experiences in them all. They currently work as the Education Coordinator for Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard where they focus on community and connection through food. In conjunction, Alissa is pursuing their Master’s in Public Health with a focus on community and families. Alissa discovered Tandem while looking for birth resources in Bloomington and was drawn in because of their approach to care and intentionality. While they aren’t working and going to school, they are most likely digging in their garden, hiking or playing with their dogs.

Alison Case
MEDICAL DIRECTOR, BOARD MEMBER
Alison is midwestern all around--born in Illinois, grew up in Ohio, went to DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, Medical School at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, and finished family medicine residency in Fort Wayne, Indiana with a focus on women's health. She spent a year between medical school and residency working as a fellow with the American Medical Student Association outside Washington DC organizing with medical students across the country on a variety of progressive issues. She also pursued additional training in obstetrics, abortion care, and addiction in pregnancy in Albuquerque, New Mexico for 9 months following family medicine residency. She is currently a full spectrum family medicine provider in Indianapolis and also provides abortion care in South Bend and Bloomington. Alison is a reproductive justice advocate spending time with various groups advocating for access to healthcare and safer, more equitable communities. She is the leader of the Indiana Reproductive Health Access Project Indiana chapter and on the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians Legislative Committee. She lives in Indianapolis with her two cats, Rex and Ahsoka, and a tankful of aquatic friends.

Claire Sunkel
BOARD MEMBER
Claire is originally from Lafayette, IN and attended the University of Colorado at Boulder where she met her now-husband. After multiple cross-country moves, Claire and her husband chose to settle in Bloomington in 2017. Claire works as a mental health counselor at a local group practice. She strongly believes that we are the stories we share about ourselves and feels honored to hold space for her clients to share and rewrite these stories. To balance life as a new mom, Claire enjoys reading fiction, spending time outdoors, and binge-watching sitcoms.

Angela N. Castañeda
BOARD MEMBER
Angela is the Lester Martin Jones Professor of Anthropology at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Her research in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and the U.S. focuses on religion, ritual, expressive culture as well as the cultural politics of reproduction, birth and motherhood. More specifically, her current research explores the intimate labor of doulas; unpacking the cultural meanings of attending to birthing people during the transition to parenthood. She is currently a Wilma Gibbs Moore Fellow (2022-23) with Indiana Humanities on the project, “Obstetric Racism in Indiana: How Hoosier Doulas Resist Anti-Black Racism in Birth.” Some of her publications include the edited volumes Doulas and Intimate Labour: Boundaries, Bodies and Birth (Demeter Press, 2015) and Obstetric Violence: Realities and Resistance from around the World (Demeter Press, 2022). She lives in Bloomington, Indiana where she enjoys supporting El Centro Comunal Latino as a volunteer community birth and postpartum doula as well as spending time memory-making with her own family - Ernesto, Max and Eloisa - and pandemic pup Kahlo.

Kathleen Bensberg
BOARD MEMBER
Originally from Philadelphia, Katie came to Bloomington for law school and never left. She now lives in Bloomington with her husband, baby, and dog, and works as a civil rights lawyer with a focus on LGBTQ+ rights. Passionate about reproductive justice, Katie was drawn to Tandem’s mission and its holistic, community based approach to empowering birthing people and families.

As Tandem grows, our Board grows! We are looking for prospective board members. In particular, we are looking for individuals with accounting, nonprofit management, legal, grant writing, marketing and/or fundraising experience. Our board will expand as Tandem grows and members will have term limits. Contact us if you are interested.
