College Internship Program

Tandem’s support of the Bloomington community extends beyond growing families to students at Indiana University. Each semester, we invite students interested in obstetrics, family planning, and women’s health to enhance their professional and personal development by joining our team.

Spring 2024 Interns

Isabell Deem

Isabell Deem is a Junior pre-medical student at IU who is studying her individualized major titled "Health, Medicine, & Society: Ancient Mediterranean to Present", which combines medical sciences and humanities with Greek and Roman archaeology. She combines this with a minor in Religious Studies to explore religious healing, specifically in Ancient Greece. She also works as an EMT-B in the community and plans on going to medical school. Emergency medicine and perinatal/neonatal/maternal health are some of the specialties she is passionate about. Specifically, Isabell wants to take her skills and passion to support underserved communities. Isabell is very excited to be a part of improving maternal healthcare access in the community through Tandem!

Camila Cantu is a junior at IU currently studying Human Biology and Community Health with a minor in Spanish. She is currently on the pre-medical track and is currently interested in gynecology and pediatrics with a hope to serve underserved communities and Hispanic populations. She is very excited to work with Tandem as they continue to expand their resources across the Bloomington community. In her free time, Camila likes to do hot yoga, cook, and travel abroad!

Brooklyn Payne

Brooklyn Payne is a senior studying Community Health . After college , she will go to graduate school to begin her Masters in Public Affairs with a concentration in Innovation and Social change . One of her goals is to become a Postpartum Doula. She aspires to this career so that she can  help decrease the maternal mortality rate in Indiana . She has a passion for helping others and she wants to enhance the quality of life for underrepresented women and their families in the US and globally . She is excited to work with Tandem because she believes that they are doing the groundwork to help women and their families feel more comfortable and knowledgeable about how to care for themselves .

In her spare time , she enjoys exercising , cooking and listening to podcasts .

Erin Rakes

Erin is a junior at the IU School of Nursing with plans to minor in French. After graduation, she intends to continue schooling to become a midwife. Her passions lie in traveling, community building, and women's health. Her dream is to work for Doctors Without Borders as a midwife. She keeps herself busy by working as a CNA in a small hospital, participating in a fellowship for rural medicine, volunteering her medical skills overseas on school breaks, and interning at Tandem. If she can manage to squeeze in some free time, you can find her snuggled with her dogs, a good book, and a hot chocolate!

Becky is currently a Masters of Public Health student at Indiana University Bloomington studying behavioral, social, and community health and reproductive and sexual health. She has lived in Bloomington for 10 years but is originally from England. Her she is passionate about reproductive justice and improving individual experiences in health care, especially in gynecology. She is currently applying for Physician Assistant programs which she plans to attend after she finishes her public health degree. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, baking, and hiking with her dog Lillie.

Becky Gray

Alex Cappelli

Alex Cappelli is senior at Indiana University majoring in Human Biology and Anthropology. She was introduced to Tandem while taking a class about pregnancy and prenatal care and was immediately interested in their mission. She is excited to be a part of Tandem's work to expand obstetric and reproductive care options in the community. In her free time, Alex likes to play the bass and crochet!

Emma Domke

Emma Domke is currently a Junior at Indiana University majoring in Human Biology and Neuroscience and minoring in Spanish. She is on the pre-medical track and is interested in obstetrics and gynecology as well as emergency medicine. Emma is also interested in global medicine and conducted research about prenatal healthcare in Ghana over the summer. Through her studying abroad and research experience, she is excited to learn more about increasing women's access to healthcare through organizations like Tandem! In her spare time, Emma enjoys going on walks and cooking!

Wendy Deras

Wendy is a Latina pre-MD/PhD 3rd year undergraduate student at Indiana University studying Biology with minors in Chemistry and Social Science of Medicine. She works as a TA in a genetic engineering lab studying the bacteria Vibrio Natriegens and is passionate about science literacy. Wendy aspires to go to medical school and further advocate for women’s health by practicing obstetrics and gynecology in Latinx communities. In her free time she loves to backpack, cook and watch the sunset.

Aiyanna Witham

Aiyanna is a sophomore studying Human Development and Family Studies on a Pre-PA track. Once out in the field, she hopes to work in rural areas throughout the country to bring OB/GYN care and sexual health education to underserved communities. In her free time she enjoys working out, hiking, being a plant mom, and spoiling her cat, Bozo.
